Bad Breath (Halitosis) Causes and Treatments
Bad breath (halitosis) is a very common condition that affects millions of people. Most bad breath results from food particles trapped between your teeth that become the perfect environment for the growth of the bacteria. Most common causes of bad breath are preventable and easily treated.
Poor oral hygiene, gum disease, certain foods, certain beverages, and some medications may also cause bad breath. Bad breath can also signal a health problem related to the stomach or lungs. Some conditions that may be responsible for the development of bad breath include but are not limited to gum disease, cavities, oral cancer, dry mouth syndrome, sinus infections and dentures. The bacteria responsible for gum disease and cavities also cause bad breath. Chronic bad breath may indicate a medical condition that should be brought to the attention of your dentist or physician.
The use of mouthwashes, breath mints and chewing gums result in only temporarily masking the bad breath and will not resolve the underlying cause. However, regular brushing and flossing and professional dental cleaning and examinations can all greatly reduce bad breath or even eliminate it. Persistent bad breath requires a thorough examination by a dentist to discover and properly treat the cause.
