TMJ Symptoms
Temporomandibular
joint disorder (TMJ) is a condition that occurs when your jaw becomes
misaligned. Your temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull. It is
one of the most complex joints in your body and is responsible for performing
several important functions such as chewing, yawning, and speaking.
Most people with TMJ experience a variety of painful
symptoms, including:
- Jaw pain
- Facial pain
- Ear pain
- Difficulty chewing
- Locking of the jaw joint
- Headaches
- Limited jaw mobility
- Clicking or popping sounds when the jaw joint moves
- Facial swelling
- Neck or shoulder pain
If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you
may benefit from treatment by a neuromuscular dentist. Neuromuscular
dentistry is the area of dentistry devoted to treating conditions
associated with a misaligned jaw.
Your TMJ
treatment will involve two steps. In the first step, your neuromuscular
dentist will alleviate the painful symptoms associated with your condition.
Once this has been accomplished, the second phase of treatment will seek to
correct the underlying condition causing the misalignment and restore your jaw
to its optimal position.
