Replacing Dental Crowns
Dental
crowns are very durable restorations that should last a long time. When properly
cared for, you can reasonably expect your dental crown to function properly for
10-15 years, possibly longer.
However, your crown is not meant to last forever. Eventually
it will wear down and need to be replaced. This is natural and should not be a
cause for concern. However, if your dental crown does not last at least 10
years, it may be a sign that one of these conditions must be addressed:
- Excessive clenching or grinding of teeth
- Failure to maintain good oral health
- Your diet contains too much sugar, possibly from excessive consumption of soft drinks, candy, or junk food
- The tooth has significant decay
- Periodontal disease
In absence of one of these issues, you should expect your
crown to serve you well for years to come. When you finally must replace your
dental crown, it will most likely be due to one of the following reasons:
- Recurrent decay around the edges of the dental crown
- Wear and tear on the crown
- Broken porcelain
- Poor aesthetic appearance
- Chronic buildup of plaque between teeth
When replacing your dental crown, your cosmetic dentist will
first remove the old crown by either cutting it off the tooth or wiggling it
free of the tooth. Any decay present will be removed and repaired prior to
placing the new dental crown.
