Replacing Metal Fillings
with a Better Alternative
Most people have probably had to get a cavity filled at some
point in their lives (if you haven’t, congratulations). Dentists have
historically used somewhat unsightly metal amalgam to fill in cavities.
Relatively recently, however, cosmetic dentists have started
to use attractive white
fillings to both replace old metal amalgam fillings and fill new cavities.
Made of a resin that is hardened using a specialized light,
white fillings are tooth-colored. These white fillings:
·
Contain no mercury, unlike certain metal
amalgams
·
Look more attractive and natural
·
Are less sensitive to heat and cold
·
Restore much of the original strength of the
tooth
On the other hand, you could choose porcelain
inlays or onlays instead of white fillings. Porcelain can be more closely
matched to your tooth color, but requires two visits to fit while white
fillings require only one.
Your cosmetic dentist will help you make the choice that is
right for you.
