Taking Care of Porcelain Veneers
When you have porcelain
veneers placed, you will want to take care of them to prevent premature
replacement. It is often expected that porcelain veneers will last for upwards
of ten years, but when cared for properly, your veneers may last significantly
longer.
Brush and Floss
As with your natural teeth, veneers should be brushed after
every meal and snack. It is equally important that you floss at least once, but
preferably twice daily to help prevent debris and bacteria from getting
underneath your veneers. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and a nonabrasive
toothpaste to prevent scratching the surface of your veneers. Once scratched,
veneers will need to be replaced.
Do not use a mouthwash with alcohol. Alcohol can weaken the
dental bonding holding veneers in place. If you feel it necessary to use a
mouthwash, talk to your cosmetic dentist about which brand will be least
damaging to your veneers.
Dental Visits
Taking care of your veneers at home is important, but so too
are biannual visits to your cosmetic dentist for cleanings and examinations.
These visits allow your dentist to thoroughly clean both veneers and natural
teeth and to check for issues with your veneers and general oral health issues
as well.
