Sleep Dentistry
Millions of Americans suffer from some form of fear and anxiety associated with a visit to the dentist. Although everyone is aware that prevention is the key to good oral health, fear and anxiety prevent many people from obtaining even the most routine dental care and treatment.
Sleep dentistry is a major advancement towards anxiety-free and pain-free dental procedures. The practice of sleep dentistry allows you to be placed in either a conscious sedative sleep or an unconscious sedative sleep when undergoing dental procedures.
Typically, you are given a medication by your dentist to be taken the day of your procedure before you arrive at the dentist's office. The medication will make you drowsy and relaxed so you will need a companion to drive you to your appointment and take you home as well. When you arrive at the dentist's office, you will be given another medication to place you in an extreme state of relaxation during your procedure, coming in and out of consciousness and totally unaware of your procedure taking place.
Sleep dentistry is very helpful when you need a long and painful procedure or if you have extreme fear and anxiety that prevents you from obtaining the care and treatment you need. Sleep dentistry is also used with children who have a very difficult time sitting still for long periods needed for some dental procedures.
