How to Recognize TMJ
Temporomandibular joint disorder, commonly known as TMJ or TMD can cause a wide range of issues. The underlying cause of TMJ is a misaligned jaw, but it is often not immediately recognized because the symptoms of TMJ are so varied and can be misinterpreted.
Grinding (Bruxism)
TMJ often causes those affected to grind their teeth. This can also result in chipped or cracked teeth as well as soreness in the jaw. Although grinding can occur outside of TMJ you should check with a cosmetic dentist, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms.
Jaw Discomfort
A misaligned jaw is also referred to as a bad bite. This can cause discomfort in your bite as well as a popping or clicking sound when chewing or moving your jaw. You may also experience swelling in your jaw and even difficulty swallowing.
Headaches
Headaches can be symptomatic of numerous problems, so it’s easy to overlook their connection to TMJ. They can be a significant indication of this disorder, however, especially those that feel like migraines.
Symptoms of TMJ can also include numbness or tingling in your fingers and arms, neck and shoulder pain, and loose teeth.
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact us to find an experienced TMJ dentist in your area today.
