What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the practice of a dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gums and tissues surrounding your teeth. Dentists who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease) are referred to as periodontists.

A periodontist usually has two to three years additional training after dental school in diagnosing and treating gum disease and the problems associated with it, and are very familiar and knowledgeable with the most advance techniques and treatments for gum disease available today.

Periodontal disease is a major factor in tooth loss in adults and has been revealed to be a contributing factor in the incidence of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Over 80% of the adult population in this country has some form of periodontal disease.

The signs and symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Red, bleeding and/or swollen gums
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Tooth loss
  • Abscessed teeth

The beginning stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, often goes undetected, but it is reversible at this point. If left untreated, the gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, which can lead to tooth and bone loss.

Good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing and professional dental cleaning, is the best way to reduce and prevent the occurrence of gum disease.

If you are concerned you may have gum disease, please contact a cosmetic dentist in your area today.

General Dentistry vs. Cosmetic Dentistry

General or traditional dentistry focuses on oral hygiene, the prevention and treatment of oral disease, and in general, addresses the problems that require the essential care and treatment of disorders and diseases of the teeth, gums and jaws.

Cosmetic dentistry takes general or traditional dentistry to a different level that introduces art to the science of dentistry. A cosmetic dentist must pursue considerable post-graduate training to be competent in the performance of cosmetic dentistry.

A general or traditional dentist is able to provide a variety of services including but not limited to professional dental cleaning and whitening procedures, the detection and treatment of gum disease (periodontitis and gingivitis), the practice of sedation dentistry, oral cancer screening, dental implants and dental bonding.

A cosmetic dentist can meet all your dental care and treatment needs with the added dimension of having the ability to enhance your appearance at the same time with immediate and long lasting results. Some of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures performed today are include porcelain veneers, dental bonding, teeth whitening, dental implants and gum sculpting.

If you are interested in learning more about what cosmetic dental procedures are available and how they can help you obtain the smile you have always wished for, please contact a cosmetic dentist in your area today.

What Can a Cosmetic Dentist Do For Me?

Cosmetic dentistry takes traditional dentistry to a higher level of artistry. Cosmetic dentistry is an art not generally taught in dental schools. Artistic training is not necessary to obtain a dental degree. A dentist must pursue considerable post-graduate training to become a competent cosmetic dentist.

If you have had a less than perfect smile since you were a child, you are the perfect candidate for the intervention of a cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dentistry offers a wide range of options for you to achieve good oral health and at the same time obtain that dazzling smile you thought was only available to celebrities and millionaires.

A cosmetic dentist will consult with you before performing any procedures to find out what you want to achieve, and will advise you of all the options available to you to reach your goals and expectations.

A cosmetic dentist has a variety of treatments to choose from including teeth whitening, inlays and onlays, dental bonding, porcelain veneers, dental implants, smile makeovers and full mouth reconstruction. Cosmetic dentistry can improve your oral health and your appearance at the same time due to the advances in technology and materials available today, with immediate and long lasting results.

If you are ready to see what a cosmetic dentist can do for your smile, please contact a cosmetic dentist in your area today.

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is traditional dentistry that has an added dimension of artistry involved. A cosmetic dentist is able to meet all the functional requirements of performing dental work, but also focuses on the appearance of your smile as well.

A cosmetic dentist undergoes extensive post-graduate training and has knowledge of the most advanced techniques and materials available. Many cosmetic dentists are accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), which means a dentist has undergone a rigorous process set out by the AACD to gain accreditation.

The most recent advances in dental techniques and procedures and the most modern materials available make cosmetic dental treatments of today longer-lasting, less invasive and more natural looking than in the past.

Some of the most common cosmetic dental procedures today include tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental bonding, dental implants and gum sculpting. So-called "smile makeovers" involving combining one or more cosmetic procedures, such as tooth whitening, dental implants and porcelain veneers are used to gain an enhanced, cohesive new look.

Cosmetic dentistry has become a wonderful way to improve your oral health and at the same time improve your appearance with immediate and long lasting results.

If you would like to have more information about the procedures available to improve your oral health and appearance, please contact a cosmetic dentist in your area today.
