What is Osseointegration?
Osseointegration is the process by which a dental implant is
accepted as a natural part of your body. The process of osseointegration can
take six months or longer. But it is due to this process that dental
implants are able to offer a permanent solution for tooth replacement.
Dental implants are made of titanium, a biocompatible metal
used in a number of medical and prosthetic devices. On the surface of each
dental implant are numerous microscopic holes. While these holes are
undetectable to the naked eye, they provide sufficient footing for osteoblasts.
Once an implant is inserted, osteoblasts fill the holes on its surface holding
it permanently into the jaw.
Dental Implant
Advantages
The process of osseointegration allows dental implants to
replace a tooth’s missing root. This prevents changes to the structure of the
jaw, an issue not addressed by any other form of tooth replacement.
In addition, dental implants:
·
Restore complete strength and function
·
Will not come lose or fall out
·
Can hold restorations that look and feel
completely natural
Dental implants are a wonderful solution for replacing one
or more missing teeth, but may not be right for everyone. To learn if dental
implants are right for you, please contact an
experienced dentist in your area today to schedule an initial consultation.
