Fresh Breath and Better Checkups: The Benefits of Mouthwash
Mouthwash is a common fresh
breath treatment. Both prescription and over-the-counter varieties can help
kill the germs that cause bad breath and may be recommended by your dentist as
part of your daily routine. But new research shows mouthwash may do much more
than keep breath pleasant.
Recent studies have shown antibacterial and antimicrobial
mouthwashes can reduce instances of gum disease, even in individuals who are
not consistent with flossing. This, of course, is not an invitation to slacken
your daily routine, but a suggestion to add to a simple step that may greatly
improve your oral health.
Use Caution
Research indicating that mouthwash can help prevent gum
disease is encouraging, but not all types of mouthwash are ideal for every
person. For example, if you have dental restorations such as dental crowns or
porcelain veneers, a mouthwash with alcohol may loosen bonding and allow your
restorations to come loose or fall out. Or if you have sensitive oral tissue,
astringent mouthwashes can cause excessive irritation and may even increase
your risk for certain oral health risks.
It is always best to discuss mouthwash use with your
dentist. Based on your specific needs your dentist will be able to recommend
which type is right for you.
To learn more about what mouthwash can do for the health of your
smile, please find an
experienced dentist in your area to schedule an appointment.
