Zirconia Abutments for Dental Implants

There are three components to a dental implant restoration:

  • The dental implant
  • A post called an abutment which connects the dental implant to your prosthetic tooth
  • A dental crown which serves as your replacement prosthetic tooth

In most cases, the abutment is made out of titanium. However, there are certain situations when titanium will not deliver a good aesthetic result. This most commonly occurs when you are replacing a lateral tooth which is located next to your top front tooth. The gums in this region are very thin. As a result, a titanium abutment will show through the gum tissue, causing a grayish appearance.

Under these circumstances, a zirconia abutment will deliver a more natural looking result. Since zirconia abutments are white in color, they will not cause a gray tint on your gums the way a metal abutment would.

Zirconia is a strong and durable material, providing you with high quality results that are comparable to what is achieved using titanium. Your cosmetic dentist can customize your zirconia abutment to achieve exceptional results that blend in seamlessly with your smile.

While zirconia abutments are most commonly used to replace a lateral tooth, they can deliver excellent results on any tooth in your mouth.

Can Dental Implants Improve my Appearance?

Dental implants are by far the most effective option to replace missing teeth. They improve the function of your bite, restoring your ability to chew all of your favorite foods. But did you know that the benefits of dental implants exceed the improved strength and durability offered in comparison to alternatives such as dental bridges or dentures? Dental implants also offer aesthetic benefits which dramatically improve the appearance of your smile.

The dental crown used for your prosthetic tooth can be created to match the shade, shape, and size of your neighboring teeth. As a result, your dental implant restoration will blend in seamlessly with your smile. Also, your dental implant becomes permanently fused to your jawbone, eliminating the wires used to attach dentures and bridges to neighboring teeth. This makes dental implants a much more discreet tooth replacement option.

The aesthetic benefits of dental implants extend beyond the appearance of your smile. They also improve your overall facial appearance. Because dental implants replace your missing root, they prevent the jawbone deterioration that occurs with alternatives such as dentures or dental bridges. This prevents the sunken facial appearance that commonly occurs when you experience bone and gum shrinkage.

If you are looking for the tooth replacement option that provides you with the widest range of functional and aesthetic benefits, then dental implants are your best choice. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate for dental implants. A thorough examination of the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone by an experienced implant dentist will help you determine if this is the ideal solution for your tooth loss.

Famous People with Bad Teeth

Let’s face it, a “Hollywood smile” isn’t always something to be coveted. Sure, there are some A-list celebrities who flash dazzling smiles, but there are also just as many with horrific teeth. Surprisingly, many of these celebrities choose to keep their bad teeth instead of spending some of their hard-earned millions on cosmetic dentistry. It’s not as if they can’t afford a beautiful smile.

This blog is a tribute to those celebrities who brazenly show off their bad teeth time and again. Here are some of the most notable bad celebrity smiles:

  •  Kirsten Dunst – The former Spider Man star gives new meaning to the term “Chiclet teeth.” In fact, her teeth are so small, it looks like her adult teeth never grew in.
  • Tom Cruise – In spite of his jagged, uneven teeth and gummy smile, Tom Cruise has managed to remain one of the biggest actors on the planet for nearly three decades. It also seems like his bad teeth haven’t really affected his ability to find a wife (he’s had three).
  • Steve Buscemi – Steve may win the award for worst celebrity teeth ever. He has a giant snaggle tooth that is so yellowed, you may want to classify its color as sepia. Perhaps he should invest in a tooth whitening procedure.
  • Mike Tyson – As Evander Holyfield can confirm, Iron Mike’s teeth work great. They are razor sharp and can chew through the toughest of ears. But those gold crowns and giant gaps in the front of his smile make him look pretty scary.
  • Hillary Duff – Sadly, Hillary’s bad teeth are of her own doing. All that money, and she went to a cosmetic dentist who delivered terrible results. Such a shame.
  • Amy Winehouse – Not to pick on a woman when she’s down (or in Amy’s case dead), but she certainly has a smile befitting of a drug addict.
  • Avril Lavigne – She might have a nice smile if it weren’t for those vampire fangs.
  • Anna Paquin – The True Blood star’s gapped and uneven smile doesn’t tarnish her beauty at all, and in her case it might even be a plus when playing a poor girl from backwoods Louisiana.
  • Michael Strahan – The former New York Giants defensive end will be flashing his smile at a Hall of Fame induction ceremony very soon and when he does, the world will once again be reminded that he is not ashamed of his now-famous gap-toothed smile.

What is a Smile Makeover?

A beautiful smile is one of the most important features you can have. It can make others view you as more attractive and take years off of your appearance. A beautiful smile also conveys warmth and confidence to others, which can be a tremendous benefit in personal and professional interactions.

Most people are not born with a beautiful smile. It is common to have one or more cosmetic imperfections which detract from the appearance of your smile. If crooked, discolored, unevenly sized and shaped, or gapped teeth prevent you from smiling with confidence, you may want to consider a smile makeover.

A smile makeover consists of one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures intended to improve the appearance of your smile. Your smile makeover will be customized to address the unique cosmetic imperfections you would like to change. These procedures may be performed all at once or over several visits to your cosmetic dentist’s office.

Depending on your unique cosmetic dental issues and aesthetic goals, your smile makeover may include one or more of the following:

  •  Porcelain veneers
  • Teeth whitening
  • Dental bonding
  • Dental implants
  • Dental crowns
  • Replacing old metal fillings with tooth-colored fillings
  • Invisalign
  • Gum recontouring to treat a gummy smile

A beautiful smile is within your reach. A smile makeover performed by a highly trained and experienced cosmetic dentist can help you flash your smile with pride.
