How a Dentist Can Help Your Snoring

It’s an all-too-common scenario in American domestic life: one partner snores, often unknowingly, and keeps the other partner awake during the night. In this case, an individual’s health problems affect the quality of life of someone they hold dear. But even if you live alone and the only person being kept awake by your snoring is you, you should not just put up with your condition.

Snoring can indicate deeper problems, and you shouldn’t just shrug off your snoring. The good news is that your dentist can address the underlying causes of your snoring and greatly improve your quality of life.
On a very basic level, snoring is just the sound you make when the soft tissue in your throat vibrates. This usually happens when the soft tissue obstructs your airway; as air moves through the area and hits the tissue, it makes a vibrating sound.

The root causes of this, however, are diverse, and can include:

  • Sleeping on your back
  • Taking a sleeping pill or drinking too much alcohol
  • Being overweight
Because snoring is often a symptom of sleep apnea, you should get yourself checked out if you’re suffering from persistent snoring.

Your dentist will be able to give you a good sense of what is causing your snoring and take the next steps accordingly. That can include referring you to a physician or prescribing you some sort of machine or appliance. Possible treatments include:

  • CPAP (a vacuum pump you wear while you sleep to keep air flowing)
  • Another form of sleep appliance
  • Surgery

Your Dentist and Headaches

Many patients come to regard their persistent headaches as an unsolvable problem they must suffer through during their day-to-day lives. They pop a couple pills when a headache comes on, turn down the lights and try to muddle through the rest of the day. They don’t suspect that their jaw might be the cause of those headaches, and they certainly don’t know that their dentist can treat their underlying condition and greatly increase their quality of life.

If you’re suffering from persistent tension headaches, there’s a chance you’re dealing with an underlying condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ/TMD. This condition affects patients even as they’re completely unaware that they even have it.

The temporomandibular joint is, for all intents and purposes, your jaw joint. You can feel it by placing your fingers in front of your ears and opening and closing your mouth.

If your jaw joint is misaligned and causes a bad bite, problems that start in the area can cascade and cause tremendous discomfort throughout your body. Headaches are the most common TMJ symptom, but others include:

  • Facial pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Pain in the shoulders
This list is far from exhaustive. A skilled, experienced neuromuscular dentist will be able to tell you if your headaches are caused by TMJ. If they are, he or she will be able to plan an appropriate TMJ treatment regimen to help.

Your Dentist and Your Breath

New Year’s is past us, but you don’t need the excuse of a brand new year to find someone to kiss. When you do find that special someone and finally lock lips, you don’t want to be worrying about your breath. The moment is packed with enough pressure as it is. Fortunately, your local cosmetic dentist can help if you’re suffering from chronic and embarrassing bad breath, or halitosis.

What causes bad breath? Well, bad breath is usually produced from a problem in one of four parts of your body:

  • Your mouth
  • Your airway
  • Your lungs
  • Your stomach
Basic dental hygiene can do a lot to stave off bad breath: brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day and you’ll do a lot to rid yourself of the bacteria and food particulates that cause bad breath.

But what happens if all that hygiene doesn’t work out and you still suffer from bad breath? That’s where your cosmetic dentist comes in. There are a number of treatments he or she can pursue in order to get your breath to a pleasant, kissable state.

Your dentist will be able to diagnose the precise cause of your bad breath and proceed from there. He or she might recommend some oral hygiene products that are specifically formulated to tackle bad breath. If your problem is more structural and is caused by acid reflux disease or lung disease, your dentist will be able to refer you to a qualified physician.

A Crown, A Veneer…And a Facial?

Dental anxiety is a serious problem. Millions of Americans put off needed dental work out of fear of the pain and discomfort they expect to experience at their dentist’s office. Well, a Fort Lauderdale, Florida dentist came up with a unique solution: offer spa services.

Yes, according to an ABC News report, Florida dentist April Patterson recently started offering services like massages, eyelash extensions and facials at her office, all in an effort to relieve the anxiety and fear experienced by many of her patients.

It’s a unique solution to an ever-present problem, but fortunately most dentists are able to alleviate your worries and reduce pain and discomfort without resorting to spa services. Advances in the field of sedation dentistry allow cosmetic dentists to put you into a state of relaxed, responsive painlessness as they perform the procedures.

Sedation dentistry is especially useful when undergoing a smile makeover, as it allows your cosmetic dentist to finish more procedures in one sitting than usual.

Dentists have other ways of ensuring your experience is as painless as possible. Many dentists are now using lasers instead of scalpels to work on gums, air abrasion instead of drills to handle relatively shallow cases of tooth decay and a computer controlled device called “The Wand” which can inject anesthetic into a single tooth with little risk of human error.
