Should I Whiten my Teeth at Home?

Many dentists offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening kits. Which one is right for you depends on your specific needs and personal desires. At-home whitening offers convenience and can be completed on your schedule. On the other hand, it can take several weeks to obtain the results a single in-office teeth whitening can offer in as little as one hour.
However, many people find whitening at home more comfortable and are willing to take the extra time. This is a decision best made between you and your cosmetic dentist.
Go Pro, Even at Home
Even if you are whitening your teeth at home it is important to work with an experienced cosmetic dentist. Store-bought kits may seem less expensive, but they are seldom worth the “savings.”
Store-bought kits do not come with personalized application trays. This can allow bleaching solution to overflow, irritating oral tissue and increasing tooth sensitivity. What’s more, store-bought kits are infamous for producing inconsistent results and requiring several applications to create the desired look.
For complete and comfortable teeth whitening, you need a professional solution. Your cosmetic dentist will be able to customize your applicator trays and provide much needed support during the whitening process. This helps ensure your comfort and ultimate satisfaction.
To learn which tooth whitening solution is right for your smile, please find an experienced cosmetic dentist in your area and schedule your consultation today.

Fresh Breath and Better Checkups: The Benefits of Mouthwash

Mouthwash is a common fresh breath treatment. Both prescription and over-the-counter varieties can help kill the germs that cause bad breath and may be recommended by your dentist as part of your daily routine. But new research shows mouthwash may do much more than keep breath pleasant.
Recent studies have shown antibacterial and antimicrobial mouthwashes can reduce instances of gum disease, even in individuals who are not consistent with flossing. This, of course, is not an invitation to slacken your daily routine, but a suggestion to add to a simple step that may greatly improve your oral health.
Use Caution
Research indicating that mouthwash can help prevent gum disease is encouraging, but not all types of mouthwash are ideal for every person. For example, if you have dental restorations such as dental crowns or porcelain veneers, a mouthwash with alcohol may loosen bonding and allow your restorations to come loose or fall out. Or if you have sensitive oral tissue, astringent mouthwashes can cause excessive irritation and may even increase your risk for certain oral health risks.
It is always best to discuss mouthwash use with your dentist. Based on your specific needs your dentist will be able to recommend which type is right for you.
To learn more about what mouthwash can do for the health of your smile, please find an experienced dentist in your area to schedule an appointment.

Solutions for Thinning Enamel

There are a number of things that can impact the strength of your tooth enamel. Acidic foods and beverages certainly play a role, even those that are healthy. But aging is also a key factor and, no matter how hard you try to prevent enamel loss, it will prove unavoidable as you age.
Problems linked to enamel loss include increased sensitivity and a yellowing of appearance. These issues cannot be treated through daily maintenance or biannual visits to your dentist. There is no reason to fret however. A skilled dentist can assess your needs and find the most effective solution for your smile.
Restoring Strength and Appearance
One of the best ways to protect and strengthen teeth with thinning enamel is porcelain veneers. Placed over the front of teeth, veneers can eliminate the yellowing appearance and reduce sensitivity to heat and cold. What’s more, porcelain veneers can improve a number of cosmetic dental issues, providing you with the straight, white, and beautiful smile you deserve.
Other solutions for protecting teeth and improving their appearance include dental bonding and dental crowns. Which solution is right for you can best be determined during your visit with an experienced cosmetic dentist.
If you are looking for the best solution for your thinning enamel, please find a qualified dentist in your area and schedule a consultation today.

Dental Bonding or Porcelain Veneers?

There are many options for perfecting smiles marred by common cosmetic issues. Two of the most popular are porcelain veneers and dental bonding, both of which can address a number of problems. However, there are distinct differences between the two and learning which one is right for you requires the assistance of an experienced cosmetic dentist.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is applied in layers over a tooth’s surface and can be used to address cosmetic problems such as size irregularities, crooked presentation, and chips and cracks. Bonding can be completed in a single office visit and may produce results for several years, but will need to be touched up over time.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are placed over the front of teeth to address nearly every conceivable cosmetic imperfection. Veneers require a small amount of tooth preparation and the process may not be completed for two to three weeks. However, porcelain veneers tend to last longer than dental bonding and may be better suited at addressing more pronounced cosmetic issues.
Finding the Right Solution
Each smile is different and no one solution will be suitable for all. The best way to learn if dental bonding, porcelain veneers, or a combinations of procedures is right for you is through a one-on-one consultation with an experienced cosmetic dentist.
To learn more about perfecting your smile, please contact a cosmetic dentist in your area today and set up your initial consultation.

What is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration is the process by which a dental implant is accepted as a natural part of your body. The process of osseointegration can take six months or longer. But it is due to this process that dental implants are able to offer a permanent solution for tooth replacement.
Dental implants are made of titanium, a biocompatible metal used in a number of medical and prosthetic devices. On the surface of each dental implant are numerous microscopic holes. While these holes are undetectable to the naked eye, they provide sufficient footing for osteoblasts. Once an implant is inserted, osteoblasts fill the holes on its surface holding it permanently into the jaw.
Dental Implant Advantages
The process of osseointegration allows dental implants to replace a tooth’s missing root. This prevents changes to the structure of the jaw, an issue not addressed by any other form of tooth replacement.
In addition, dental implants:
·         Restore complete strength and function
·         Will not come lose or fall out
·         Can hold restorations that look and feel completely natural
Dental implants are a wonderful solution for replacing one or more missing teeth, but may not be right for everyone. To learn if dental implants are right for you, please contact an experienced dentist in your area today to schedule an initial consultation.
