Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist

There are many cosmetic dentists vying for your business. How will you know which dentist has the skills and experience to deliver the beautiful cosmetic dentistry results you desire? Your cosmetic dentist’s ability will have a significant impact on the appearance, durability, and functionality of your results.

The best place to begin your search is by asking for recommendations from people you trust. If you have friends or family members who have undergone cosmetic dentistry treatment, you should ask them about their experience. Your general dentist can also be a good resource, and he should most likely be able to give you the names of some of the best cosmetic dentists in the area.

You should look for a dentist who makes cosmetic dentistry a primary focus of their practice. Your dentist should have undergone extensive post-graduate training in the field of cosmetic dentistry from a place like the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), the premier cosmetic and neuromuscular dentistry training facility in the country.

Other factors to consider when choosing a cosmetic dentist include:

·         How many years of experience does the dentist have performing cosmetic procedures?
·         Does the cosmetic dentist use the most advanced technology?
·         Do the cosmetic dentist’s before and after photos demonstrate a strong ability to achieve beautiful results?

At your initial consultation, be prepared to ask your cosmetic dentist important questions about his skills and ability. If you are not happy with the answers to your questions, keep searching until you find a dentist with whom you feel comfortable.

Ancient Egyptian Mummy with Mouthful of Cavities Discovered

A recent CT scan of a mummified body from ancient Egypt reveals a variety of oral health issues including a mouthful of cavities. While his cause of death is not entirely known, researchers believe he may have died from a sinus infection caused by his numerous cavities.

Based on the way he was preserved, it is believed that the man was wealthy and from Thebes (Egypt was ruled by a dynasty of Greek kings 2100 years ago around the time the man lived). The embalming process preserved enough of his teeth for researchers to identify numerous abscesses and cavities in his mouth.

While dental practices were rather primitive 2100 years ago, the ancient Egyptians were clearly among the leaders in the field. In order to relieve the man’s suffering, the ancient dental specialist used a piece of linen dipped in medicine to create a “packing” in the man’s largest cavity. This packing formed a barrier that prevented food particles from entering the cavity, and the medicine was most likely used to minimize the rather intense pain he was likely experiencing.

This dental packing was observed on the CT scan recently performed. Researchers have declared it as the first known case of this packing treatment being performed on an ancient Egyptian. This packing differed significantly from a modern dental filling in that its aim was not to stabilize the tooth. Instead, it seems the primary purpose was to create a barrier and relieve some of the man’s pain.

Taking Care of Your Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are an excellent way to correct a wide range of cosmetic flaws with your smile. They are an extremely durable restoration that delivers beautiful, natural looking results. But in order to make sure your results last as long as possible, you will need to take good care of your teeth and gums following your procedure. Since your porcelain veneers are attached to the front surface of your teeth, any oral health issues that develop will become even more problematic.

You should care for your veneers just as you would care for your natural teeth. Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to remove any debris and prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar. You should also visit your dentist at least twice a year for your regularly scheduled teeth cleanings. This will ensure you don’t develop any oral health problems that may impact your veneers.

While your porcelain veneers are highly durable, they are not indestructible. In order to prevent chipping your veneers, avoid biting down on hard substances such as bones, ice, or hard candies, and do not chew your fingernails. If you grind your teeth at night, you may want to wear a mouth guard to protect your veneers from chipping or breaking.
