The Power of Dental Imaging

In medicine more so than anywhere else, knowledge is power. The more your dentist understands about the problems that are ailing you, the more accurate his or her diagnosis will be and the more effective the treatment will be. Fortunately, modern dentists are equipped with a remarkable array of dental technologies, most of which are designed for the express purpose of providing your dentist with the clarity he or she needs to most effectively treat your condition.

With high-tech dental imaging your dentist can:

  • Take digital X-rays that minimize your exposure to radiation while getting crisp, clear images of your teeth and jaw
  • View better images of your bones
  • Evaluate your vulnerability to TMJ/TMD
  • Design more effective treatments

Exciting new developments in the field of dental technology are changing dental practices for the better. New communication systems allow your dentist to give you a clear picture of what your teeth will look like after your procedure, providing you crucial insight that was not available in the past.

While new technologies are advancing the frontier of dental science, it’s the skill and capability of your dentist that will make your experience a pleasant one.

A Valuable Bond

Dental problems can range in severity from relatively mild to quite serious. As a result, there are some cosmetic dentistry procedures that are more appropriate for problems of a certain type. If you have some small, relatively simple cosmetic issues, your dentist might recommend dental bonding.

Dental bonding is usually appropriate for patients dealing with problems like:

  • Decayed teeth
  • Small chips in teeth
  • Small cracks in teeth
  • Crookedness
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Stains that can’t be addressed by teeth whitening

Part of the reason dental bonding is popular with many patients is that it’s a simple procedure that requires little preparation work. A resin that matches the color of your teeth will be applied to the appropriate area. Then, your dentist will use a light to harden the material.

And that’s it. Your procedure is finished. Dental bonding usually takes just one visit, and requires no anesthesia. It’s painless.

Dental bonding lasts between three and 10 years and can be maintained using the same basic tenets of dental hygiene that your dentists have been explaining your whole life. Just avoid chewing or biting any hard objects and you should be satisfied with your dental bonding experience.

Ask your dentist if you have any dental bonding questions.

The Advantages of Teeth Whitening at the Dentist’s Office

We all want whiter teeth. After all, we understand that a bright, photogenic smile is a tremendous advantage in our day-to-day lives, and what does more for your smile than whiter teeth?

When considering teeth whitening, you have a few different options. But your primary choice is a simple one: should I get my teeth whitened by my dentist at his office or should I opt for over-the-counter, at-home treatments?

Many people are intrigued by the apparent convenience of at-home treatments, and this is understandable. However, the fact remains that teeth whitening at your local cosmetic dentist’s office is almost always a superior option.

Put simply, teeth whitening at your dentist’s office is more effective than the at-home kits you can buy at your local drug store. Because big companies have to mass produce their teeth whitening products with a mind toward making them attractive for a large audience, they cannot customize their treatments for your specific needs.

As a result, while you might get some superficial whitening on the front of your teeth from at-home treatments, you won’t get the thorough whitening experience you want.

By contrast, your dentist will be able to customize your tooth whitening for your unique requirements. He or she can design whitening trays that are built for the specific purpose of giving you a thorough whitening.

Further, your dentist has access to whitening technology that is more advanced than what you get over the counter. And it’s safer to rely on the skilled, experienced hands of your dentist for your whitening.

If you are interested in home whitening, talk to your dentist before making any purchases. He or she will be able to give you advice, and most dentists offer take-home kits as supplements to an office whitening.

No Need for Scare Tactics When it Comes to Dental Implants

A dentist in Norcross, Georgia recently found himself in hot water as a result of a billboard he placed advertising his dental implant practice. The billboard contains two pictures: one, a shot of a mouth that’s nearly empty of upper teeth, and a second, showing the same mouth with a full set of glittering white dental implants.

Unfortunately, the billboard was erected across the street from a local daycare. School administrators complained to the billboard company, who in turn contacted a local news station for help in reaching the dentist. The dentist apologized and had the billboard removed.

Advertising in the modern media environment is tough, but fortunately we don’t need scary pictures to make the case for dental implants. The fact remains that they are excellent options for treating the serious problems that can arise from missing teeth. Those problems include:

  • Increased risk of losing more teeth
  • Difficulty chewing and eating
  • Bone loss
  • Affected speech

With strong, durable dental implants, your local dentist can go a long way toward minimizing your risks of facing these problems. Dental implants will give you a healthier mouth.

They’re also excellent for addressing your cosmetic dental concerns. Nothing can mar a smile quite like missing teeth. Dental implants can give you a bright, photogenic smile you’ll be proud of.
